Woodland Scenics was founded in 1975 by David Osment, the owner of Osment Models, Inc., an architectural firm based in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Originally focused on building commissioned architectural and engineering models for both national and international corporations, the firm was highly regarded for its meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship. However, when the 1975 recession severely impacted the architectural modelling industry, Osment recognised the need to diversify his business. Leveraging his expertise in model-making, he began to explore new opportunities within related industries, eventually turning his attention to the world of model railways.
During his research, Osment discovered a significant gap in the market for realistic scenery materials within the model railway industry. At the time, there were few, if any, commercially available products that could match the high-quality, lifelike landscapes he had been creating for architectural models. Seizing the opportunity, he developed a range of scenic materials that closely mimicked real-world landscapes. Osment showcased his initial offerings at a model railway trade show in Chicago, where they received an overwhelmingly positive response. Armed with this feedback, he secured several patents and began mass-producing these innovative products under the brand name Woodland Scenics. The company’s first catalogue, launched in 1975, featured just 28 products, including tree kits, foliage, turf material, and stumps, but it marked the beginning of a new era in model railway scenery.
Over the next few years, Woodland Scenics grew rapidly, establishing itself as a leader in the model railway industry. By 1981, the company had expanded its product line and was distributing over 100 products across the United States, with a growing international presence in Canada, Germany, and Sweden. As demand continued to increase, Woodland Scenics relocated to a larger facility in Linn Creek, Missouri, near the picturesque Lake of the Ozarks. This move enabled the company to scale up production and continue innovating, solidifying its reputation as a pioneer in realistic model railway scenery. Today, Woodland Scenics remains a beloved brand among railway modellers worldwide, known for its commitment to quality and its role in transforming the way enthusiasts bring their miniature worlds to life.
